Bridgend County Borough Council has announced plans to retain and restore The Buccaneer, a prominent Porthcawl seafront building with over a century of history, rather than proceed with demolition. The structure, located at the junction of Mackworth Road and the seafront at Sandy Bay, will undergo restoration to reinstate its original 1930s architectural features and remove mismatched modern additions. The building’s “ocean liner” design will be preserved while capitalizing on its views of the beach and sea.

Building’s Centuries-Old History

The Buccaneer has served multiple roles since its construction. It began in the 1930s as the Continental Café, later becoming Sidoli’s Ice Cream Parlour after World War I. From the mid-1950s to the late 1970s, it operated as the Rising Sun, a live music venue with an upper-floor nightclub called the Pagoda Rooms. In the late 1970s, it was renamed The Buccaneer and reopened as a local bar before closing entirely in 2024. The Welsh Government acquired the site after the previous owner sought demolition permission, integrating it into the council’s waterfront regeneration plans.

Restoration and Future Use Plans

Restoration efforts will focus on historical accuracy, with initial suggestions for the building’s future use including a restaurant or café, alongside retail spaces and kiosks to leverage its seaside location. Councillor Colin Davies, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Housing, emphasized the building’s “long and colourful association with Porthcawl” and its potential to become an “iconic seafront landmark.” He noted that the heritage restoration approach reflects the council’s commitment to high-quality standards across all regeneration efforts, including housing, infrastructure, and community facilities.

The building’s revival aligns with broader efforts to reinvigorate Porthcawl’s seafront, where demolition work initially planned for earlier in the year has been delayed to avoid summer disruptions. These efforts will include removal of the former funfair and Beachcomber site, as well as the Wimpy building, to clear the area and enhance views toward the restored Buccaneer.

Interim Leisure Facilities During Regeneration

While demolition and restoration proceed, the council will maintain access for pedestrians, cyclists, wheelchair users, and parents with pushchairs. Interim leisure facilities, such as padel courts, crazy golf, beachfront yoga, and surf schools, will be installed to provide temporary attractions. These measures aim to minimize disruption and sustain the area’s appeal during construction.
