Vietnam’s Beaches Drive Domestic Tourism Boom

Beach destinations are driving Vietnam’s domestic tourism boom, with Phu Quoc, Danang, Hoi An and Con Dao leading the surge.
Traveloka data points to a coastal surge
Traveloka released its inaugural SEA Index on April 18, analyzing booking and search data across five Southeast Asian markets. The report notes that travellers are venturing further afield and staying longer, channeling spend into richer experiences. While Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Danang remain the most-booked destinations overall, the strongest momentum comes from Vietnam’s own islands and coastline.
Domestic demand is outpacing international travel. Vietnam’s domestic and international bookings grew in step, unlike Thailand and Indonesia, which cooled, and Singapore, which poured its growth abroad. The domestic market was led by beach destinations, particularly Phu Quoc, Con Dao, Hoi An and Danang. Phu Quoc saw bookings rise 86 percent year-on-year, making it the quarter’s strongest domestic travel success story.
Con Dao, Hoi An and Danang also performed well, with Vung Tau completing an all-beach domestic table. Data points to leisure travel rather than routine trips, with beach destinations attracting larger-than-average groups of 1.87 to 1.97 travellers and attraction bookings rising alongside accommodation stays. Dalat was the notable exception, with demand cooling sharply despite strong growth across most other domestic destinations.
Beach culture reshapes the travel map
The shift toward coastal areas reflects a change in how Vietnamese people spend their leisure time. Families are increasingly choosing destinations that offer a blend of heritage, food culture and accessibility, while travellers are drawn to the quieter island experience and natural beauty found in places like Con Dao, which offers a unique digital media innovation in its tourism approach.
As infrastructure upgrades and visa reforms boost Vietnam’s global appeal, the domestic focus on beaches is changing the country’s tourism scene. This trend suggests that the local market is not just returning to pre-pandemic levels, but actively seeking out specific types of vacation experiences. They are looking for a mix of relaxation, culture, and entertainment, which is driving the growth of beach destinations.
It is a notable trend.
