Swansea gamers vie for Miami esports spot - esports qualifiers
Swansea University’s Red Bull Wings Cup qualifier on November 3 offers a pathway to the UK National Final and Miami World Final.

Swansea University students will compete in the Red Bull Wings Cup on November 3, with top performers advancing to the UK National Final and a potential spot at the World Final in Miami next year.

The on-campus qualifier is open to all students, regardless of skill level, and uses EA SPORTS FC 27 as the competition game. Winners from the university event will join other qualifiers in the race for the UK final, scheduled for November 14 in London.

Players who progress through the PlayStation Tournament Open Qualifiers and live events will face off in online FACEIT Closed Qualifiers, with the top six advancing to London. The UK finalists will then compete for the chance to represent the country at the World Final in Miami in January 2027.

Competitors can also earn rewards by redeeming Limited Edition Red Bull Wings Cup cans, launched nationwide on September 1. Each can includes a QR code and unique code for 250 EA SPORTS FC 27 Season Points, an exclusive Ultimate Team Kit, and a Loan Player Item. Players have been able to use these rewards since September 18.

The competition spans multiple stages, beginning with registration on September 27. Open qualifiers run until November 1, while university qualifiers continue until November 7. The structure ensures a broad field of participants, with the strongest advancing through single-elimination brackets.

Red Bull Player Angry Ginge and EA SPORTS FC esports star Tekkz will oversee the event. Angry Ginge highlighted the inclusive nature of the competition, stating: “I’m proper excited to be part of Red Bull Wings Cup. EA SPORTS FC is a massive part of my life and content, but this is a chance to experience it in a completely different way, with anyone able to get involved and compete for the chance to take it all the way to Miami.”

The event aligns with broader trends in esports, where university-based competitions often serve as accessible entry points for casual players to engage with professional-level tournaments. Previous iterations of similar events have drawn large participation from non-competitive fans, blending social and competitive elements.
