About Us

Plaza Boricua was born in the spring of 2020, over Zoom calls and late-night conversations between friends who’d watched their own businesses struggle during the pandemic and Hurricane Maria’s aftermath. We were a group of entrepreneurs—some based in San Juan, others in Chicago, Atlanta, and Miami—bound by a shared frustration: no single resource tracked the resilience and growth of Puerto Rican-owned businesses across the diaspora. After a friend’s bakery in Ponce shuttered due to supply chain chaos, and another’s tech startup in Brooklyn faced invisibility in mainstream business media, we realized there was a gap. Not just in coverage, but in recognition of the unique challenges and triumphs of our community. That’s when we decided to build something that reflected our reality, not someone else’s.

Our mission is simple: to spotlight the stories, strategies, and successes of Puerto Rican entrepreneurs who are building businesses on and off the island. We don’t just write about growth—we track it. Every month, we publish in-depth profiles of startups, small business owners, and nonprofit leaders, paired with data-driven insights on trends in Puerto Rico’s economy and the diaspora’s entrepreneurial landscape. We’re the only platform doing this work, and it’s not easy. We’ve spent hours on calls with rural farmers in Vieques, interviewed third-generation bakers in Harlem, and partnered with local economists to ensure our reporting is both rigorous and rooted in our community’s needs. Quality isn’t a buzzword here—it’s the reason we’re still here, three years later.

If you’re reading this, you’re probably someone who’s fought to keep your business alive, who’s navigated the weight of cultural expectations while building something from scratch, or who’s seen a friend’s dream take flight and wants to celebrate it. That’s why we’re inviting you to join us. Whether you’re a first-time entrepreneur, a seasoned business owner, or someone who wants to amplify our community’s voice—we need you. Visit our Contact Us page to share your story, suggest features, or collaborate. Together, we’re not just building a platform—we’re building a legacy.
